eXtended Reality for Civil Engineering

The course teaches students the fundamental knowledge and key skills required to apply XR - eXtended Reality (i.e., Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed reality) to Civil Engineering systems. It covers the core concepts of XR, tools, and techniques for XR development, and how to design and develop XR research applications (incl. data collection and analysis). Moreover, this course highlights the application of XR for CE systems, including transportation, structure, construction, and infrastructure. All students will obtain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art XR technologies, including development platforms (e.g., Unreal Engine) and hardware (VR, AR, and MR headsets), and learn how to apply XR to CE practice and research.

Enrollment information: Based on the current course, and the planned assignments, a minimum of 6 students will be required to enroll in the course. A maximum of 45 students is also in effect.

Formative assessment:

Peer feedback: each group will be asked to prepare a draft research proposal (including research question, experiment design, data collection plan, etc.) and a prototype of their XR application. Another group will be asked to give feedback on the research plan and the porotype XR application.

Lecturers give direct formative feedback during the practice workshop.

Summative assessment:

Each group will present their final project in a poster presentation format. All group members are expected to actively engage and respond to questions posed by the lecturers.

A successful participation in the elective, requires a minimum grade of 5.8.
