Glass Science and Engineering
Beschrijving
Glass plays an ever more prominent role in structures through its application in facades, roofs, floors, beams, columns, walls and complete glass constructions. Consequently, there is an increasing emphasis on glass technology both in engineering practice and in research, resulting in a strong need for engineers in this field.
This course therefore focuses on the application of glass in structures and covers the state-of-the-art in glass research and engineering. Through lectures, workshops, analyses and a hands-on design of a glass structure, students learn about the engineering and research aspects of glass, such as its mechanical behaviour, manufacturing processes, testing procedures, design standards, connection typologies, safety aspects, sustainability considerations and innovative glass structures.
Toetsing
Formative feedback on the assignments is given in weekly workshops and via interim presentations.
Written report, consisting of 2 parts:
1. Structural design of a glass structure.
2. Analysis of a glass engineering and research project.
Background information:
During the course the students work on two assignments, namely:
1. Design a glass structure.
2. Analyse a glass engineering and research project.
The design project and project analyses are supported through the weekly lectures. In addition, during weekly workshops, the students get advice and (formative) feedback from the tutors on their assignments.
At given moments, the students shortly present their results in an oral presentation and get (formative) feedback from the tutors and their fellow students.
Finally, the students document their design project and analyses in a written report, which is graded (summative assessment).
A successful participation in the elective, requires a minimum grade of 5.8.
For more information on grading, see article 14 in the Rules and Guidelines (RGBE):
