International Design Contest

International Innovation Competition as a tribute to the 135th anniversary of Technologisch Gezelschap.

In this project you will clearly define the innovation/design challenge for a chemical product/process. You will gather relevant data about relevant scientific and engineering subjects from different sources including online searches. This information is used to ‘synthesise’ innovative design alternatives for this challenge and analyse and evaluate the design alternatives to arrive at the most promising/suitable innovative design. Your design definition, approach, results, analysis, evaluation of design options and the choice of the ‘best’ the design will be reported. Especially the argumentation of how you arrived at your best design concept, and why you consider it ‘best’, and clear recommendations how the design might be further improved are crucial parts of the report. The students are able to defend the content to a team of specialists in this particular field of science/engineering. The design study is carried out in order to achieve the creation of an innovative design based on retrieved information from the study. The students work together in teams to develop their designs within a limited period of time, meeting the specifications of this chemical engineering innovation challenge. This course is an international contest in which Chemical Engineering students from across Europe can participate in teams of two.

Each project is assessed by the coach and a member of the jury. The design project will be assessed on three key elements (each element is graded between 1-10):

1. Application of design methodology and tools and theoretical knowledge & understanding (40%)

2. Design Quality (innovation extent, theoretical sound/correct) and Project Execution (project organization, planning and execution, teamwork) (30%)

3. Communication & Social skills (30%) = interaction with coach (progress meetings), reporting

A more elaborate grading scheme will be made available to all of the participants at the start of the contest

The minimum requirement to pass the course: one of the elements may have a mark of 5.0 while the other two items are 6.0 or higher.
