Design and Remodelling (discontinued)

This course is part of the minor Timeless Typologies, which will focus on researching and modelling historical architectural precedents. The second course in this minor is Culture & Understanding (History), students need to take both courses at the same time.

The chosen theme in the minor will be represented by a series of case study projects, regarded as influential in the architectural field. Students will be lectured and guided in studying and researching the historical context, spatial lay-out and technical aspects of these projects. Through this analysis of the case study projects students will come to a deeper understanding of the building and the ideology and typology at the root of the design. The resulting understanding of historical, spatial, and technical values of the architectural precedents will help students to relate to present architectural practice. Existing documentation will be used, digitalised, and completed.  This will accumulate in the making of physical models. This is based on the principle that understanding can only be achieved by remodelling and rebuilding. 

For Design en Remodelling:

- Visual analysis, represented by sketch models and drawings.

- Presentation: Models and graphics in exhibition setting.

The project receives a grade preferrably as a group. In case a whole group fails the course: If graded as 5 or 5.5 the group will be given the chance to repair through an additional group assignment. Please be aware that the tutors have the possibility to give one group member a higher or lower grade, based on feedback on their performance. In case an individual student fails the course (by not attending, or not actively participating in the group work, for instance): If graded 5 or 5.5 there will be a possibility for a repair through an additional individual assignment. The deadline for a repair is two weeks after the final presentation.
