Form and Inspiration

The Form and Inspiration course is a 10-week MSc2 elective (5 ECTS) that takes students on a journey from inspiration to form. Students will thoroughly explore a chosen Inspiration in order to design a detailed architectural element or space (e.g., window, ceiling, room), which we refer to as Form.

Guided by your personal inspiration, you will actively and deeply engage with artistic work to transcend the limits of the purely analytical. The process involves acts of sensing, documentation, association, abstraction, expression, translation, imagination, and innovation on a small scale. The course is a process of attentive observation and continuous material engagement, aimed at achieving experiential, sensitive, and material understandings beyond the superficial. These understandings serve as the foundation for the design of a specific and detailed interpretation of a classical architectural element or spatial archetype.

The final deliverables are:

• Artwork expressing the understanding of the chosen inspiration (medium of choice)

• A physical scale model (1:20) of the assigned architectural element/space (form)

• A textual description of the inspiration and a textual description of the final form and its relationship to the inspiration

• Documentation of the artistic process in a booklet

Assessment Criteria:

SKETCHES INSPIRATION:

• Selection of observational sketches show relevant approach of the inspiration

• Sketches show effective and explorative study with chosen technique

ARTWORK INSPIRATION:

• Artwork expresses a concluding quality of the inspiration in an evocative, relevant and precise way through a suiting medium.

DESIGN SKETCHES

• Sketches show effective study with chosen technique

• Sketches show coherent, imaginative, innovative translation from inspiration to arch. element

• Sketches show functionality and meaning of architectural element

MODEL

• Model is a relevant and correct representation of the design

• Model has relevant and evocative material choices

• Model shows technical 1:10 design choices

• Model has a proper composition and detail level appropriate to scale 1:20

Knock out criteria:

• presence at both presentations

• complete set of deliverables

• process booklet hand-in

Grades are communicated within 10 working days after the presentation.

Repair: The design project is awarded a grade that is a whole or half number between 1.0 and 10.0. Students pass the course with a 6.0 or higher. With a grade below 6.0: students who presented assessable work during the course are allowed to do a repair to change the grade into a ‘pass’. The repair is unsupervised and needs to be completed within 2 weeks after the end of the course. When the repair is unsuccessful, the student needs to follow the entire course again.
