Beschrijving

Climate models are crucial to answer vital questions about the impact of climate change and contribute to informed decision-making for sustainability and resilience.  In this course, you will learn how climate models are designed, and gain a deep understanding of their strengths and limitations, which are crucial for interpreting model predictions accordingly. You will also explore how to build simple climate models that provide valuable insights into the key physical processes driving climate change. Moreover, the course will teach you how to process and analyze state-of-the-art model output, enabling you to extract meaningful information about the projected future climate. To analyze the data – from climate models but also from field measurements or satellite observations – you will be introduced to key statistical methods and procedures, learn to apply them correctly, and become aware of their pitfalls. You will then learn to integrate observations into climate models using data assimilation to improve their predictive skills. With this knowledge, you will be able to answer vital questions about the drivers and impact of climate change and contribute to informed decision-making for sustainability and resilience.
