Beschrijving

This course is primarily part of the Minor 'Geo-resources for the Future: Social, Economic, Environmental and Political Challenges'. This module gives a geological and engineering introduction to geo-resources. Some economic, political and social aspects will inherently be included, but is not the primary focus.

The course has a number of aspects:

  • Self study: Geo-MOOC to understand basic relevant aspects of geology.

  • Lectures: a selection of mini-lecture series on a specific geo-resources will be given. The focus of each mini-series will be 20% technical, 20% project development and 60% on (global) trends, social aspects, political aspects, environmental aspects, etc.. The focus will be on current resources and how they have been utilised in the past and today. The mini-series topics are (may change): (i) Mining and Minerals (focus on critical raw materials), (ii) Oil and Gas (past, present, future outlook), (iii) Waste Storage (nuclear waste, CO2, sediments) and (iv) Energy (geothermal energy, resources needed for wind and solar energy, H2 storage and energy).

  • Forum activities: the 'forum' contains joint activities across the minor. Summative assessment will take place in the forum activities.
