Rock Mechanics

The main goal of this course is to understand and be able to apply the principles of rock mechanics to a range of rock engineering applications, including the design of underground and surface excavations.

The course is divided in 6 modules:

1. Concepts of stress and strain

2. Behaviour of intact rock

3. Underground excavations

4. In situ stress

5. Rock mass characterisation and behaviour of discontinuities

6. Surface excavations

• Group assignments (45% of the final grade)

• Closed-book written exam on the whole course content (55% of the final mark)

• AES Information Literacy 2 module (Pass/fail)
