Beschrijving

This course is an introduction to sedimentology, sedimentary environments, sedimentary processes and facies analysis, sediment preservation possibilities and resulting sedimentary architecture in the subsurface and stratigraphy, stratigraphic methods and applied sedimentology. The course covers sediment-petrographic analysis of sandstones and carbonate rocks, relationship between sediment-petrographic parameters and petrophysical log properties, and the depositional environment, and initial core study.

The practical introduces the students in sediment-petrographic analysis, using thin sections of cores and rock samples as hand-samples and cores. The practical is focused on the description of sands, sandstones and carbonate rocks. The emphasis in the description is on the relation between the different sediment-petrographic parameters, like grain size, sorting, texture, and diagenesis, and petrophysical properties that relate to porosity and permeability.
