Programming and Scientific Computing in Python for AE1

Two 4 hour sessions per week (divided over 4 parts of the course , see below).
Every session consists of instruction, examples, assignments and wrap-up/solutions. Also challenges and competitions are part of the course.
Part 1 General Purpose Programming in Python
Part 2 Scientific Computation en Plotting (NumPy, Matplotlib)
Part 3 Numerical simulation, Visualisation en Animation (PyGame incl. game programming)
Part 4 Contest en Diagnostic tests en Test Exam
Toetsing
The course is assessed with a computer exam. This is an open-book exam. It consists of four parts:
Reading Python: Read snippets of Python code and figure out what is printed when the code is run.
Debugging Python: Analyse a piece of code and assess what (if anything is wrong) (multiple choice)
Complementing Python: Analyse a piece of code and fill the gaps.
Writing Python: create code to implement a solution to each question.
Code editors and Python are only available for the fourth part of the exam. The point distribution over these four parts is: 18/6/21/45. The final grade is calculated as 1 + pts/10.
Additionally a bonus point can be gained during the lecture sessions:
0.5 points for handing in at least 5 correct assignments (assessed, pass/fail per assignment)
0.5 points for participating in the programming competition (assessed, pass/fail)
The bonus point is valid in the year it is obtained and the year after that. It can therefore be combined with up to four exams. The bonus point will count towards the final grade for the course if the unrounded exam grade is at least a 5.0.
